The gallery is pleased to present, “The Museum Collection,” our tenth solo exhibition of work by the world-renowned Canadian photojournalist Larry Towell.
Towell became a freelance photographer in the early 1980s, documenting human rights issues in Central America during Ronald Reagan's American presidency. Through long-term projects, his award-winning photographs have been featured in numerous publications, with many becoming iconic images that have helped shape contemporary discourse.
Towell celebrated his 40th year as a professional photojournalist with a portfolio of handmade darkroom prints, created in collaboration with Canada’s Bob Carnie of Silver Shack, Toronto. This collection offers a brief yet impactful survey of his career from 1974 to 2010. The prints, sized 22 x 30 inch and 33 x 43 inch, serve as a compassionate record of the human condition in challenging times and places. Locations featured include Cabañas, El Salvador; Durango, Mexico; Ramallah, Hebron, and Gaza, Palestine; Kabul, Afghanistan; New York City, on the morning of 9/11; and Ontario, Canada; among others. Towell created this portfolio to reside in public collections, ensuring that a concise yet comprehensive record of his work, printed to the highest standards, remains publicly accessible.
