Opening Reception: Thursday, April 3rd, 5-7pm and Saturday, April 5th, 12pm-3pm with Artists Attendance
Kostuik Gallery is proud to present new paintings and assembled paper works by gallery artists AJ Oishi and Matt Shlian.
Rooted in a deep fascination with color, geometry, and the artistic process, AJ Oishi’s work is meticulously crafted with paint on the eraser side of a #2 pencil using a pointillist technique. By adding thousands of tiny dots and carefully selecting color combinations, Oishi creates a meditative visual experience.
“I am fascinated by color and the many combinations that can be used. No matter how long I paint, color will always provide endless possibilities.” – AJ Oishi
Matt Shlian creates mesmerizing paper sculptures by merging intricate hand-folding techniques with digital mapping. Working at the intersection of art and science, Shlian describes himself as a “paper engineer”. Microscopic natural forms and structures like cell membranes inform the patterns of his works.
“As a paper engineer, my work is rooted in print media, book arts and commercial design. Beginning with an initial fold, a single action causes a transfer of energy to subsequent folds, which ultimately manifest in drawing and three-dimensional forms.” – Matt Shlian
