Newzones is pleased to present "Abstraction Vol. 1", a group exhibition of leading names in Canadian contemporary art. Featuring new and exciting work by Michael Batty (Vancouver, BC), Vicky Christou (Vancouver, BC), Geoffrey Hunter (Calgary, AB), Trevor Kiernander (Montreal, QC), Don Maynard (Kingston, ON) and Janna Watson (Toronto, ON), "Abstraction Vol. 1" will explore how these artists push the boundaries of abstraction to create work that is thought-provoking and challenges both the traditional use of materials and formal aesthetics.
Broadly, the term abstraction may be used to describe artwork which is based on an object, figure or landscape, where forms have been simplified, and/or schematized. "Abstraction Vol. 1" will highlight each artist’s approach to their art practice, and how their process explores and realizes their interpretation of abstraction. Although each of the artists are creating work which is generally considered to fall into the category of abstraction, this is the only commonality when comparing the artworks. "Abstraction Vol. 1" remains true to the gallery’s emphasis on process-oriented artwork; media ranges from traditional applications of oil and acrylic to the use of fabrics, collaged mixed media, and elaborate layering processes.
Exhibition Dates: March 8 - April 17, 2025
