Artist Talk | Looking for Mona Lisa: An Exhibition of Works by Bev Tosh & Cecilia Gossen

  • Calgary Central Library 800 3 Street Southeast Calgary, AB T2G 0E7 Canada (map)

DaVinci’s Mona Lisa is the “the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world”.

Planted firmly in cultural consciousness after its theft from the Louvre in 1911 (and subsequent return in 1914) the portrait is the archetypical masterpiece. In their exhibition Looking for Mona Lisa, Artists Bev Tosh and Cecilia Gossen consider Mona Lisa as an image and an icon. What makes her so easy to recognize? How many details can be removed for her to still be recognizable? Playful and tongue in cheek, Tosh and Gossen have reconstructed and remixed Mona Lisa’s image in an exhibition that follows their first Looking for Mona Lisa show at Masters Gallery Ltd., with brand new works added.
