EXHIBITION LISTING

Michel Goulet - De la commodité à la connaissance
3/13/2013 - 4/20/2013

The exhibition De la commodité à la connaissance brings together three groups of recent works by Michel Goulet: Blanc de mémoire, Signe/signal et Paysages éphémères (Opus 1 à 14). True to form, in them the artist works with the notions of enumeration, accumulation and inventory, listing and collating the things of this world to lead us to contemplate, along with him, those traces of everyday life that are often ignored or deprecated. In doing so, he forces us to take another look at them and, perhaps, even discern their inherent mystery. Through his sculptures Michel Goulet presents an array of common signs generally considered mundane and ordinary, placing us in front of a multitude of trifling events arising from spatial connections or mental associations. Those regarding these works—at once destabilized and in a heightened state of awareness—can no longer remain indifferent to the challenge to their reality. Michel Goulet’s intention is to captivate minds through the strange, complicated, and amazing worlds he creates. And it is up to each viewer to be taken in—or not—by the artist’s “game.”

The artist would like to thank the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for its support of this exhibition.

Director(s)
Simon Blais

Galerie Simon Blais was founded in 1989 and initially specialized in works on paper and contemporary abstract prints. Today, the gallery represents both emerging and established artists working in diverse media such as painting, drawing, sculpture, prints and photography. Historical paintings and sculptures are also a special interest for us, with a focus on leading Québec and Canadian artists such as Riopelle, Ferron, Letendre, McEwen, Alleyn and Molinari, which are regularly presented in the context of exhibitions. Photographs are also part of the gallery's regular inventory with a select group of Québec photographers (Campeau, Carrière, Clément, Excoffier, Pocreau).
